Martha, Jason, and I decided to check out the South Sky Way fishing pier in St. Petersburg, FL on Saturday 10-20-07. That evening my addiction to hooking Tarpon and someday hopefully landing one began. I met this gentleman named Tony and he gave me some tips about what leader strength to use on my Penn Boat Rod/Reel combo and how to hook them. Within 10 minutes I had a 200lb Tarpon attached to my line and jumping for at least 3 minutes and then it ran towards the piling and snapped the line. That was it Martha and I were hooked on this new venture...so the next night Sunday we head out to the same spot where there is a 115 foot drop and it was raining...then at the height of the high tide a monster (maybe 300lbs. )Tarpon was running through my line. Martha helped hold the rod and we fought that fish for almost 8 minutes until he ran towards the skyway and gracefully jumped out of the water and turned to slice my line once again. In between this time I caught some other pretty large fish but you see the adrenalyn rush you get with Tarpon fishing is like no other high I have ever experienced in my entire life. I hooked two more Tarpon and no luck bringing them in but now I plan to study. I will research and learn everything there is to know about this huge action fish. People do not eat them and I understand that...what would I do if I caught one...hmmm take a picture, well lots of pictures. Mounting one for a wall in the house is an idea as well. Well we plan to enjoy the Tarpon season as it is here and when they go I just will have settle for other fish who are not so challenging. We highly recommend Tarpon fishing and when they leave I am thinking of taking up some shark fishing as it is very similar. I hope you enjoyed this enthusiastic blog entry. I am soooooooo excited about this new chapter in my life!!!
